3 Lessons from my first 3 Months as a Product Manager in a Startup

Wow, has it been 3 months already?

The first three months have flown by and suddenly I’m no longer the new kid on the block. While I’m not exactly a veteran yet, I’ve certainly found my space and settled in nicely. So what are the three most important lessons I’ve learned in this time?

Step up and into your role by gaining clarity from your leaders and support from your team.

It’s so difficult to know where to start and depending on how organized the leadership is, you may find yourself floundering a bit in the beginning. I’m glad my manager had a good idea of what he wanted me to achieve in my first couple of months and set me on that track immediately. While we did have to work hard to find the right balance between hand-holding and throwing into the deep end, we have since worked out the kinks. Using weekly 1:1s to review where I’m at, paired with daily asynchronous communications, I was able to achieve my Q3 goals, even though I had only been at the company for two months at that point. The clarity and direction he provided gave me the confidence to step into the role and work closely with the team to drive towards successful product outcomes. It helps that everyone at our company is super talented and we work hard together to achieve our goals. The team has been so welcoming, collaborative and supportive that I look forward to work…
